WHAT'S IN A COLOR DESCRIPTION?

For something as personal as deciding what lipstick looks good on you, simple product descriptions that rely on a purely visual understanding of color can seem useless to those with low or no vision. What if we approached those descriptions in a new, more inclusive way?

We partnered with the blind and low vision community to build an AI that generates expressive and immersive descriptions of makeup products that extend beyond the visual. In order to train the AI, we had to consider: what makes a good color description for someone who maybe has never seen color before?

The following challenge will ask you to explain a color in a way that doesn’t reference things a person would need to see to understand. Try invoking other senses, aside from vision. A shade of green might look lush like a lawn feels, or appear fresh like a mountain forest smells.
